Paine cancels Saturday football game

Paine College’s second football game of the year will have to wait.

Athletic director Tim Duncan said Thursday afternoon the matchup scheduled Saturday between the Lions and the Orangeburg Eagles has been cancelled “due to logistical concerns,” he said.

“Club football isn’t as regulated as we would like,” Duncan said. “However, it’s still an opportunity to show our product to the CSRA community.”

Paine will now hold an intrasquad scrimmage at 2 p.m. Saturday at Laney Memorial Stadium as part of its Family and Friends Day. The game, as well as all parking in the lot adjacent to the stadium, will be free to the public.

Previously purchased tickets for Saturday can be redeemed for one of the following: a concession credit good for two combos Saturday, entrance into any of the remaining games this season or a full refund from the Paine business office on the first floor of Haygood-Holsey Hall.

The Lions played their first club football game this past Saturday in front of a crowd of 4,938 spectators, Duncan said. The attendance, he added, affirmed Paine’s belief that Augusta was ready for college football.

“People wanted an outlet,” he said. “We’re able to quench that thirst.”

Lions coach Greg Ruffin said his team has been working in practice this week on protecting the quarterback after Paine dropped its opener, 20-13, to Georgia Prep Sports Academy. Also, he said his team needs to protect the ball better.

“We had four fumbles when we were driving to score,” Ruffin said. “We could’ve easily won that game by 21 points instead of losing by seven.”

Love that last line!

“We had four fumbles when we were driving to score,” Ruffin said. “We could’ve easily won that game by 21 points instead of losing by seven.”

Translation: If we were any good, we could have won.

Y'all do understand this is a NEW team not playing a full schedule til next year! Just something else to complain about for y'all but y'all are not supporters anyway! Teams are not playing Paine maybe so they can play a full team but next year they will play for real! Maybe the other team fears getting beat by Paine and being embarrassed so think about that! I am surprised they didn't get blow out on the opener so they are probably better than what others had expected!

Just interesting that first

Just interesting that first the team they were supposed to play got changed and now it gets cancelled all together. Hints at something more to me.

We really want Paine to succed in all of it's missions but this

sounds like the Paine we all know with problems in all aspects of it's programs. Whether it be academic, administration, finances and now football they just can't seem to get a handle on running anything! :(

Dig

We cannot tell from this story whether the source material came from a printed (or e-mail) press release, a press conference, or an actual interview with the coach; but I wish reporter Chris Gay had dug a little deeper before publishing a story so lacking in depth.

A reporter should not let a coach get away with a mealy “cancelled due to logistical concerns” cop out. The reporter should have pressed for details. And if the coach would not answer the reporter’s questions, the story should have been spiked.
