The Lions (13-14) will face either Stillman or Clark Atlanta at 7:45 p.m. Thursday in the quarterfinals.
In the women’s game, Paine outscored LeMoyne-Owen 36-10 in the second half to wipe out a 12-point halftime deficit and roll to a 59-45 victory.
The Lady Lions (12-15) will play Kentucky State at 1 p.m. Thursday in the quarterfinals.
In the men’s game, Paine led 63-50 with 7:45 to play following a three-point play by Jordan before the Magicians stormed back and cut it to 72-70 on a free throw by Lamada Williams with seven seconds left.
Kedric Taylor was fouled and hit two free throws for Paine with five seconds remaining to make it 74-70 before Shad O’Garro made a 3-pointer for LeMoyne-Owen with two seconds left to cut it to one.
Paine’s Allen Young was then fouled with one second left and made the first of two free throws to close out the scoing.
Taylor, Sean Morgan and Jerel Stephenson added 11 points each for the Lions.
O’Garro led LeMoyne-Owen (6-21) with 18.
In the women’s game, Paine outscored LeMoyne-Owen 16-2 to open the second half to take the lead. A 3-pointer by Ashley Watts with 12:55 left gave the Lady Lions the lead for good at 38-37.
Watts led Paine with 25 points. Lashonda Canty added 13 and Kiara Farley had 10. Canty and Farley both had eight rebounds each.
