Kevin McPherson admits the timing is terrible, but he couldn’t turn down the chance to return home.

The Georgia Regents men’s golf coach said Tuesday he turned in his resignation for the same position at Coastal Carolina. McPherson, a Conway, S.C., native, grew up less than a mile from the campus.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” he said. “It is bad timing. I understand that. With the quality of guys I have here in the program, there’s no good timing.”

McPherson, 33, steps down one tournament into his third season leading the Jaguars. He worked for three
years as the school’s women’s golf coach before taking the reins in the summer of 2011 from Josh Gregory, who departed for Southern Methodist University after winning two national championships.

McPherson said the perks of his new coaching gig are a bonus to the location. He didn’t go into details about his salary, but he said he’ll receive a raise (McPherson made $60,183 in the past fiscal year, according to open.georgia.gov, while outgoing coach Allen Terrell earned $89,259, per The State newspaper).

McPherson also said he’ll receive a courtesy car (which he didn’t have at Georgia Regents), a full-time assistant coach (which he also didn’t have) and other potential bonuses and incentives.

In addition, he’ll work with an operating budget comparable to a major golf program in the Atlantic Coast Conference or Southeastern Conference, he said.

McPherson turned in his two-week notice after the Jaguars opened their 2013-14 season with a tie for sixth place about two weeks ago in the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational.

He said he’ll start his new job before the Jaguars play in the Brickyard Collegiate Championship on Oct. 4-6 – Coastal Carolina also plays next weekend in the David Toms Collegiate.

According to a news release from Georgia Regents, athletic director Clint Bryant said an announcement for a new coach is pending.

McPherson, who’s engaged to be married June 14, returns to his hometown where his parents and brother reside. His sister, LPGA golfer Kristy McPherson, is also moving back.

The Coastal Carolina job opened up when Terrell stepped down earlier this month to run an academy started by his former star player, Dustin Johnson.

As for his time at Georgia Regents, McPherson said he learned quite a bit and added he’ll miss being a part of the Jaguar program.

“The supporters around here are second to none around the country. They spoil us and make sure we’re in good hands,” he said, adding that he’s leaving the Jaguar program in good shape.

“They’re in good hands. It’s a young team, but it’ll continue to get better.”

GRU lets Jag's men golf coach leave...

Clint, we totally understand! You can't give a raise and a new car to a golf coach that can't produce winners. Kevin reminded me of an administrative coach with his flat line personality. We wasn't a leader to the boys. ASU needs a good motivator that will get the boys up for the competition and produce winners! And Clint... 60K and no car, won't buy you a good assistant brother. Com'on Man, you have a reputation to protect.
