As Nate Teymer walked down the steps from his office to the basketball court, the Lady Jaguars delivered a rousing ovation.

Teymer and his Augusta State women’s basketball players learned the news before Tuesday afternoon’s practice. Teymer was named the Peach Belt Conference Coach of the Year after leading the Lady Jaguars to a 21-5 regular season record and an East Division title three years after the program went 1-26. Augusta State is enjoying its first winning season in five years.

“It’s all about these girls working hard, and that’s why I’m proud to receive it on their behalf,” said Teymer, who became the first Augusta State women’s coach to win the honor since Lowell Barnhart (1992, 1995). “If it wasn’t for them, this wouldn’t have happened.”

USC Aiken took home two major awards on the men’s side. Senior guard Re’mon Nelson was named the league’s player of the year, while Vince Alexander was named co-coach of the year along with UNC Pembroke’s Ben Miller.

Nelson is averaging 13.1 points, 3.5 rebounds and 6.5 assists per game for the league champion Pacers. Nelson ranks fifth nationally in assists and needs 11 more for the Peach Belt career mark.

Alexander led USC Aiken to a 19-7 regular-season campaign and its second consecutive league title.
