Augusta State basketball games mark end of era before name change to Georgia Regents

Today marks the end of an era for Augusta State basketball.

After five decades playing as either Augusta College or Augusta State, the men’s and women’s teams play their final home game with “Augusta” on their jerseys. Next season, the team will play as Georgia Regents University – provided Regent University doesn’t win its trademark infringement lawsuit against the Georgia Board of Regents.

“This will be the last time to chant ‘A-S-U’,” Jaguars coach Dip Metress said. “In my nine years at Augusta State, I’ve had a lot of great experiences at home. I’d love to finish out and win our last game as Augusta State in front of our home crowd.”

The Lady Jaguars open the homecoming doubleheader with their 1:30 p.m. contest against Francis Marion at Christenberry Fieldhouse. The men’s game follows at 3:30.

The Augusta State women (18-5) trail USC Aiken by one game for the Peach Belt Conference East Division lead. The Lady Jaguars are looking to avenge an overtime loss to the Patriot women in January.

In the men’s game, Augusta State (12-11) is trying to win and remain in fourth place in the East Division – the top four teams in each division advance to the Peach Belt Tournament. The Jaguars have dropped six of their past eight games, including a Wednesday home loss to Lander, and hold a half-game lead over Flagler.

Now, Augusta State will try to sweep Francis Marion and notch its final home win carrying the “Augusta” name.

“I don’t know how GRU is going to look,” sophomore guard Devonte Thomas said.

“But I’ve loved playing for Augusta State. Augusta State holds a lot of value and tradition. We’re just going to try to pull it out for Augusta State.”
