Don’t worry about Nate Teymer. He’ll be fine – even if he has to endure another game decided at the wire.

Augusta State blew a nine-point lead late, but the Lady Jaguars survived for a 51-48 victory over Lander on Wednesday night after Lea Saunders missed a game-tying 3-pointer at the buzzer.

“I keep pushing back my doctor’s appointment to have my blood pressure checked,” said Teymer, Augusta State’s third-year coach. “I’ll get it checked after the season.”

Augusta State (18-5, 11-5) learned in the afternoon it is ranked eighth in the first Southeast Region poll of the season. With their third win in the past four games, the Lady Jaguars pulled within one game of USC Aiken for the Peach Belt Conference East Division lead.

“We’re excited,” senior forward Tiffany Jaecks said. “To keep (in the rankings), we have to keep winning.”

Augusta State shot just 34 percent from the field, but the Lady Jaguars clamped down on defense and limited Lander (8-15, 5-11) to 28 percent shooting in the second half.

Jemimah Ashby, in her third game back from a knee injury, led the team with 11 points. Becky Newhouse added 10.

Augusta State overcame a 26-12 deficit late in the first half with a 12-2 run. Eryka Menzies swished a 14-foot jumper to give Augusta State its first lead at 34-32.

Ashby scored eight points in a three-minute span to push the margin to nine. But Lander, led by Saunders, charged. Saunders followed a 3-pointer with two free throws to pull the Bearcat women within three.

After Tanchelle Hollingsworth missed the front end of a 1-and-1 with 16 seconds remaining, Lander had one final chance. But from the left corner, Saunders launched a contested 3-pointer, missing long at the buzzer.
