His 23rd-ranked Lady Jaguars play host to the third-ranked Lakers at 5:30 p.m. tonight in Augusta State’s second top-25 matchup in a row at Christenberry Fieldhouse. The men’s game follows at 7:30.
The Augusta State women are looking to bounce back after losing to No. 5 USC Aiken on Saturday on a buzzer-beating 3-pointer.
The Lady Jaguars (15-3, 8-3) will have their hands full against Clayton State (20-0, 13-0), a team Augusta State has lost to by an average of 45 points the past three contests under Teymer.
In his first season with the Lady Jaguars, Teymer watched the Lakers hand Augusta State its worst defeat in program history, a 112-43 loss, Dec. 18, 2010.
“We just bring up the fact it’s a really good team,” Teymer said. “I think we’re better than we were last year.
“Hopefully, we’ll learn from our mistakes and move on.”
Clayton State is led by speedy guard Drameka Griggs, who averages 18.5 points a game on 53 percent shooting. She also leads the league with 73 steals.
In the men’s game, Clayton State coach Gordon Gibbons is making his final visit to Augusta. Gibbons announced last week his plans to step down at the end of the season.
Augusta State (10-8, 5-6), which already had depth issues inside the paint, may be without the services of Devon Wright-Nelson. The sophomore forward sprained his right ankle Saturday against USC Aiken and is questionable to play against the Lakers (10-10, 6-7).
The Jaguars are looking to snap a three-game slide. During that stretch, Augusta State has failed to shoot better than 40 percent from the field.
