Eight-run fifth sparks Jaguars in opener

Nate Crown doubled in three runs to highlight an eight-run fifth inning, and Augusta State rallied to beat Carson-Newman 10-6 on Friday in its season opener at Lake Olmstead Stadium.

Kevin Dodson and Jeff Rice both went 2 for 4 and scored for the Jaguars. Seth Foster scored twice.

Zach Long went 3 for 4 with a run and RBI for Carson-Newman. Brandon Roberts and Kevin Franchetti had two RBI each.

Kip Custer went five innings to get the win, allowing four earned runs on five hits. He struck out three and walked two.

Chris Armstrong took the loss, allowing three earned runs on seven hits in 4 1/3 innings. He struck out four and walked three.
