Augusta State impressive in early season

Augusta State. The “Augusta” farewell tour is off to a rousing start, with the
21st-ranked Jaguars (4-0) notching several key wins (Benedict, Bowie State, Virginia Union) so far this season.

• The Jaguars will take on 11th-ranked Lincoln Memorial (6-0) on Dec. 19 at James Brown Arena in their first game in downtown Augusta in 17 years. Billed as “Jam The JBA,” the game will tip off at 6 p.m.

Augusta State last played at the downtown venue (formerly the Augusta-Richmond County Civic Center) on Dec. 16, 1995, defeating Paine College 80-64.

Montevallo men. After playing in the 2012 NCAA Division II title game, the Falcons are 3-3, with losses coming to Anderson, Stillman and Tuskegee.

The Francis Marion men (3-1) have beaten three cupcakes playing a video-game style of up-tempo offense this season. The Patriots are averaging 126 points a game, but they’re also allowing 107 points a contest.

• Paine women at North Alabama, 1 p.m.

• Augusta State at Lander, 1:30 (women), 3:30 (men)

Augusta State (4-0): The Jaguars open their Peach Belt Conference slate against an explosive Bearcats’ offense.

Paine (1-2): Off until next Saturday, the Lions must shore up their rebounding.

USC Aiken (3-2): Santoine Butler is second in the league with 15 blocks.

Augusta State (5-0): If the Lady Jaguars can defeat Lander today, they might be for real.

Paine (1-5): Newcomer Ashley Watts off to a slow start, shooting 23 percent from the floor.

USC Aiken (6-0): The Lady Pacers are limiting opponents to 52.8 points a game.
