Augusta’s Lander connection was too much Wednesday night for the Lady Jaguars.
Kaylyn Small and Ciara Lyons combined for 29 points to help the Lady Bearcats defeat Augusta State, 75-60, in a Peach Belt Conference game.
The Lady Jaguars (7-6, 2-3) lost their third consecutive game. Augusta State also dropped its seventh in a row to Lander, but the Lady Jaguars played a closer game this time after getting outscored 201-87 in two meetings last season.
“We were competitive,” Augusta State coach Nate Teymer said. “We got down again and we fought back. But that can’t be the theme.”
Lander (10-3, 5-0) features five players from Augusta, though only four saw action. The Lady Bearcats played without guards Jasmine Judge (Hephzibah High School) and Mukia Myrick, each of whom were suspended after a fight Saturday against Georgia Southwestern.
Ciara Lyons (Glenn Hills) led the Augustans with 19 points and seven boards, while Small (Richmond Academy) posted 10 points and 11 rebounds. Kami Phillips (Laney) added eight points and nine assists. Ashley Watts (Butler) shot 0 for 1 from the field.
Brittni Johnson led Lander with 20 points. Her 3-pointer at the buzzer staked the Lady Bearcats to a 43-32 halftime lead.
Augusta State failed to pull within single digits in the second half. The Lady Jaguars shot 41 percent from the field. Jemimah Ashby led Augusta State with 14 points.
