Lady Jaguars' winning streak ends

A late Lady Jaguars comeback wasn’t enough after a  slow start on Wednesday night.

Armstrong Atlantic State jumped on Augusta State in the first half and the Lady Jaguars never recovered, falling 73-64 in a Peach Belt Conference game at Christenberry Fieldhouse.

“It showed a lot of character,” Augusta State coach Nate Teymer said of his team’s late charge. “But you’ve got to come out of the gate strong.
“Hopefully, this is a learning lesson.”

The Pirate women (8-4, 3-2) snapped the Lady Jaguars’ six-game winning streak. Angelia Hills led Armstrong with 17 points, while Mauri Wells, Demisha Mills and Jazmin Walker each added 14.

Augusta State (7-4, 2-1) trailed by 19 at halftime, but the team recovered with a 50 percent shooting performance in the second half. Jemimah Ashby scored all 14 of her points for the Lady Jaguars after intermission, while Becky Newhouse added 14.

The Lady Jaguars forced 11 turnovers in the second half and pulled within 58-55.

Augusta State couldn’t pull any closer thanks to its own poor free-throw shooting.

The Lady Jaguars shot 8 for 15 (53 percent) from the line in the second half. Augusta State entered shooting free throws at a 60 percent clip.

“It needs to get better,” Teymer said. “That’s something we’ve got to focus on.”
