Egardo drained the go-ahead 3-pointer with 29 seconds to go and Augusta State pulled away for a 51-44 win over UNC Pembroke on Monday at Christenberry Fieldhouse.
"I knew somebody had to take the shot," the senior guard said. "I felt confident. I took the shot."
Jarquella Woods scored a game-high 15 points and Egardo added 12 as the Lady Jaguars snapped a 41-game Peach Belt Conference losing streak. Augusta State (7-14, 1-12), whose last league win came Jan. 24, 2009, against Georgia Southwestern, also snapped a 12-game losing streak this season.
"We don't want to feel satisfied," Egardo said. "We want to be hungry for more."
Augusta State entered after allowing 97 points to both No. 16 USC Aiken and No. 1 Lander in its past two games.
"It makes you better if mentally you see the big picture," Lady Jaguars coach Nate Teymer said. "I think they got used to playing those type of teams and it paid off tonight."
Augusta State avenged an eight-point defeat last month at UNC Pembroke. This time around, the Lady Jaguars shot 14 for 16 at the free-throw line, while the Lady Braves made 7 of 17 attempts.
Augusta State led for most of the game and retained a 10-point advantage with eight minutes remaining. UNC Pembroke (9-13, 5-9) drew even with a 12-2 run. Domonique Washington capped the spurt with a layup to knot the game at 44-all with 1:36 remaining.
Augusta State, which had missed its previous three shots and committed two turnovers in the final four minutes, needed a big shot. Egardo, who was 2 for 11 from the field at the time, got open on the perimeter and swished the 3-pointer.
"She was driving me crazy with some of her shot selection in the second half," Teymer said. "I'm not going to argue with her about that one."
Egardo later drained two free throws, while Brooke McCants added two more foul shots. At long last, the Lady Jaguars locked up a Peach Belt win.
