Augusta State's golf team finished the regular season with a tournament in Utah, seemingly the Jaguars' last trip out west.

Then, the NCAA stepped in.

Augusta State, the fifth-ranked team in the nation according to Golfweek , is packing its bags for San Diego for the Division I Regionals, May 20-22. The Jaguars are a No. 3 seed in the 13-team field at Carlton Oaks Golf Course.

Six regional sites throughout the country will play host to 81 teams. Thirty teams -- the top five at each site -- will advance to the NCAA Championships, June 1-5, in Ooltewah, Tenn.

"That's definitely kind of a shock," said Augusta State golf coach Josh Gregory, who believed his team would get placed in the Atlanta regional. "If you look at it on paper, it's a very fair site."

Augusta State posted eight top-five showings, including three tournament wins, in 10 tournaments this season.

Despite their accomplishments, the Jaguars are seeded below No. 1 Oregon (No. 9 in the nation) and No. 2 UNLV (No. 16 in nation). Also in the field are Tennessee, Chattanooga and host San Diego State.

"They feel slighted to get a No. 3 seed and getting moved to San Diego," Gregory said about his players. "If we're a team that's going to contend for a national championship, we need to try and win this regional."
