Augusta College men's basketball coach Marvin Vanover asked Roscoe Williams for a favor in late 1970.

Roscoe Williams will run the clock at Augusta State for the last time during this weekend's tournament.

Vanover needed someone to fill in as the official clock operator. Then a new employee at the school, Williams accepted on the spot.

"That one night has turned into 40 years," he said.

For four decades, the genial Williams has seen every generation of Jaguars basketball from his courtside seat.

Citing Ecclesiastes 3 -- "To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven" -- he has decided to resign his post.

His run as the official clock operator will end after the Division II Southeast Regional, which runs Saturday through Tuesday at Christenberry Fieldhouse.

"It's time to move on and to sit up in the stands and observe like everybody else," he said. "I'll be doing that for the first time in a long, long time. I've kind of wondered what it'd be like to look at it from up there."

Hi Roscoe! I actually did

Hi Roscoe! I actually did not know that you were there keeping the clock when Greg Witcher's youngest child came to the tournament with Lenoir-Rhyne for the last two years. I certainly hope that you are well and that David continues the fine tradition.
