Dylan Thompson (right) is slated to be South Carolina's starting quarterback in 2014.

He’s less secure about Thompson’s backups right now, saying “we’ll have to keep Dylan healthy.”

It’s not that Spurrier’s frustrated or upset with his backups. He just understands talented reserves like Brendan Nosovitch and Connor Mitch haven’t had time to shine with Shaw’s success the past four seasons.

Shaw led the Gamecocks to three consecutive11-win seasons and left with a record of 27-5 overall as starter, 17-0 at home.

Thompson is a redshirt senior who’s filled in the past two years when Shaw was injured.

Thompson attained folk-hero status among Gamecock fans in 2012, leading South Carolina to a 27-17 victory at rival Clemson when Shaw was out.

GEORGIA: Quarterback Hutson Mason passed for 152 yards and two touchdowns – both to Chris Conley – in the Bulldogs’ first spring scrimmage.

“I thought the scrimmage was about like the weather: good and bad,” coach Mark Richt said. “It came down pouring rain and it was hard to do anything offensively.”

RAVENS: Running back Ray Rice and Janay Palmer were married Friday, one day after Rice was indicted by a grand jury on third-degree aggravated assault for allegedly striking Palmer unconscious, according to ESPN.com.

Palmer had also been charged with simple assault.

The wedding ceremony had been planned for a couple of weeks, according to sources.

FALCONS: Coach Mike Smith wants to clear the air. Atlanta is not switching to a 3-4 defense.

“I think it’s a non-question,” Smith told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “We are going to do what we’ve done in the past.”

Now, some tweaks are in order.

“We changed what we are calling the guys, but we are doing what we’ve done in the past,” Smith said. “We are going to be very multiple.”

49ERS: Cornerback Chris Culliver has been arrested on suspicion of felony hit and run and reckless driving after he drove a car into a bicyclist and fled, police said.

The bicyclist wasn’t seriously hurt, police said.

NOTRE DAME: Linebacker Jarrett Grace had surgery to insert a rod to into his right leg that was broken in four places last season.

Coach Brian Kelly is optimistic Grace should be ready this fall.
