Georgia Regents men's basketball coach Dip Metress has his Jaguars playing well despite an injury to star forward Harold Doby.

Dip Metress. The Georgia Regents head coach, in his 10th season in Augusta, has shown he still has his touch. Earlier this week, his team went to Alabama and knocked off No. 10 Montevallo. Don’t be surprised if Metress sees his team back in the national rankings soon.

WHO'S NOT

Clayton State. Entering Friday’s play, the Lakers are 4-3 (0-2 in league play). Maybe the slow start to the Peach Belt Conference schedule is karma for the school forcing out longtime head coach Gordon Gibbons last season.

HONORING THE IRISH

The Jaguars will honor the state champion Aquinas High School football team during halftime of their 4 p.m. Sunday contest against Mount Olive at Christenberry Fieldhouse.

According to the school, all Aquinas football team personnel (players, coaches, managers, trainers), along with cheerleaders and the Fighting Irish Drum Corps, will be admitted free.

All Aquinas High students who present their student ID will be admitted free as well.

THIS WEEK'S GAMES

• Georgia Regents women at Coker, 2 p.m., today

• USC Aiken men at King, 3 p.m., today

• Mount Olive at Georgia Regents men, 4 p.m., Sunday

• USC Aiken women, Paine men and women off until next year

MEN'S REPORTS

Georgia Regents (8-2, 2-0): The starting lineup is like a box of chocolates and senior forward Harold Doby is out for a few more weeks (foot surgery). Still, this team is improving on defense and finding ways to win close games.

Paine (4-5): Kedric Taylor leads the team with a 13.8 scoring average, while Kenny Fluellen (13.7) is just behind.

USC Aiken (9-2, 2-0): Pacers dominated UNC Pembroke and Francis Marion during the past week.

WOMEN'S REPORTS

Georgia Regents (5-3, 2-0): With the unexpected return this season of forward Jemimah Ashby, the team has found its footing and could be a Peach Belt East Division contender.

Paine (2-7): Ashley Watts averaging 29.6 points a game on 41 percent shooting from the field.

USC Aiken (2-9, 0-2): In a rebuilding season, the Lady Pacers have lost five games by six or fewer points.
