GRAMBLING, La. — Texas Southern rallied from a 10-point deficit and defeated Grambling State 23-17 when backup quarterback Jamal Small plunged through the middle of the opposing line for a 2-yard score in overtime at Eddie G. Robinson Stadium on Saturday.

The defeat extended a pair of dubious streaks – 13 consecutive losses (dating back to Oct. 20, 2012) and 19 games against NCAA competition (Dec. 10, 2011) – for Grambling (0-9, 0-6 SWAC) and put a damper on a chaotic 10-day stretch that included a boycott, a forfeit and a swarm of national attention to this campus in rural Louisiana.

NOTRE DAME: Tommy Rees showed no signs of a strained neck that knocked him out a week ago, throwing a career-high five touchdown passes to help the Irish rout Air Force 45-10.

The senior was on target all day, completing 17 of 22 passes for 284 yards as the Fighting Irish (6-2) won their third in a row.

Rees now has 54 career TD passes and moves past Ron Powlus for third place in team history.

VANDERBILT: Jordan Matthews had eight receptions for 92 yards in a 56-24 loss to Texas A&M to become the Southeastern Conference’s all-time leader in career yards receiving with 3,172.

EASTERN MICHIGAN: Demarius Reed was supposed to be playing football Saturday.

Instead, he was remembered at a funeral service 60 miles away from the Eagles’ game at Northern Illinois.

“I expected to see him on the field today, instead (we’re) here,” his mother, Tanesha Reed, said. “But, it’s OK. It’s OK because God has spoken.”

Demarius Reed, whose funeral was held at Holy Temple Cathedral in Harvey, Mich., was fatally shot Oct. 18 at an off-campus apartment building in Ypsilanti, Mich. He was shot multiple times, and items were taken from his pockets, The Ann Arbor News reported. Robbery was a possible motive in the crime.

RECORD FALLS: Western Connecticut running back Octavias McKoy set the NCAA all-division single-game collegiate rushing record with 455 yards Saturday.

McKoy broke the previous mark of 441 yards, set by Marietta’s Dante Brown in 1996.

McKoy, a senior for Division III Western Connecticut, finished with 455 yards and five touchdowns on 43 carries in the Colonials’ 55-35 win over Worcester State.

He scored on runs of 15, 1, 41, 53 and 71 yards.

LaDainian Tomlinson holds the FBS single-game record with 406 rushing yards.
