S.C. State, Mercer post victories

ORANGEBURG, S.C. — Dondre Lewis-Freeman ran for 140 yards and one touchdown to lead South Carolina State to a 30-6 victory over Hampton on Saturday in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

The Bulldogs (3-2) played without three of their top four rushers but still piled up 248 yards rushing, nearly 80 more than their season average (170.5 per game).

Dondre Brown added 86 yards rushing and two touchdowns in the win.

The Bulldogs held Hampton (0-5) to just 229 yards of total offense, recorded six sacks and a safety.

MERCER 31, DRAKE 17

In Macon, Ga., John Russ threw for a touchdown and rushed for two more to lead Mercer (4-0) over Drake (1-3) in a Pioneer Conference opener.

Russ was 9 of 23 passing for 172 yards. He also scored on runs of 1 and 44 yards.

Mercer had a total of 161 rushing yards led by Payton Usher, who gained 90 yards.

The Bears defense held Drake to just 69 rushing yards, forced three Bulldog fumbles and intercepted Drake quarterback Andy Rice four times.

COASTAL CAROLINA 53, ELON 28

In Elon, N.C., Lorenzo Taliaferro ran for a career-best 205 yards and three touchdowns to lead Coastal Carolina (5-0) over Elon (1-4).

Alex Ross added 297 yards passing and three touchdowns as Coastal Carolina set a school record for total yards with 652.

SAMFORD 62, WESTERN CAROLINA 23

In Birmingham, Ala., Andy Summerlin threw for 327 yards and four touchdowns as Samford (3-2) coasted past Western Carolina (1-4, 0-2 Southern Conference) in its conference opener.

CHARLESTON SOUTHERN 27, APPALACHIAN STATE 24

In Boone, N.C., Christian Reyes rushed for a season-high 167 yards and a touchdown as Charleston Southern (5-0) edged Appa­lachian State (1-3).

FURMAN 24, THE CITADEL 17

In Charleston, S.C., Fur­man (2-2, 1-0 Southern Confer­ence) stopped The Citadel (1-4, 1-2) on fourth down at the 20-yard line with under three minutes to play to preserve a win.

Terry Robinson ran for two first-half touchdowns for Furman.

CHARLOTTE 45, PRESBYTERIAN 21

In Clinton, S.C., Matt John­son threw for three touchdowns and Kaliff Phillips ran for two more as Charlotte (3-2) beat Presbyterian (1-3).

DELAWARE STATE 24, SAVANNAH STATE 22

In Savannah, Ga., Cory Murphy threw two touchdown passes to lead Delaware State past (1-3, 1-0 MEAC) past Savannah State (1-4, 0-1 MEAC).
