WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Tanner Price accounted for two touchdowns, redshirt freshman Jonathan Williams had 143 yards receiving and Wake Forest forced six turnovers in a season-opening 31-7 victory over Presbyterian on Thursday night.
Price was 14 of 25 for 219 yards, threw a 20-yard TD pass to Spencer Bishop and ran 3 yards for another score.
With their Atlantic Coast Conference opener next Friday at Boston College, Wake Forest mostly kept things simple on offense while its defense forced three fumbles and picked off three passes.
Brandon Chubb returned an interception 29 yards for a touchdown and redshirt freshman Josh Wilhite took his first career carry 21 yards for a late score.
Williams caught five passes and set a school record for receiving yardage by a freshman in his debut.
Tamyn Garrick – who graduated from Williston-Elko High School – was 9 of 15 for 36 yards with a 1-yard touchdown pass to Kris Hurley for the Blue Hose.
KENT STATE 17, LIBERTY 10
In Kent, Ohio, Colin Reardon threw a 42-yard touchdown pass to Chris Humphrey late in the fourth quarter as Kent State avoided a season-opening upset.
The Golden Flashes, coming off the best season in school history, were without running back Dri Archer, being touted by the school as a potential Heisman Trophy candidate who suffered a leg injury early in the game. He had 10 yards on 3 carries.
CENTRAL FLORIDA 38, AKRON 7
In Orlando, Fla., Blake Bortles had three touchdown passes and threw for a career-high 314 yards as Central Florida blew past Akron.
Storm Johnson added 99 yards rushing and two scores as the Knights won their eighth consecutive season-opener.
MINNESOTA 51, UNLV 23
In Minneapolis, Minnesota’s Marcus Jones returned the second half kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown and the Gophers handed UNLV its 23rd loss in a row on the road.
Minnesota, which scored twice on special teams, turned a tight game into a romp without any scoring by the offense for the first 23-plus minutes after the intermission.
TOWSON 33, CONNECTICUT 18
In East Hartford, Conn., Towson running back Terrance West ran for 156 yards and two touchdowns and the Tigers won for the first time against an FBS opponent.
Quarterback Peter Athens threw for 192 yards and another score and running back Sterlin Phifer caught a 23-yard touchdown and ran for another.
