Tennessee Volunteers quarterback Justin Worley, a South Carolina native, has been named by head coach Butch Jones as the team's starting quarterback.

Coach Mark Richt said last week that he thought there was a good chance Matthews would play against Clemson in Saturday’s season opener.

Matthews, a freshman who drew raves for his performance during the spring, has been out with a strained hamstring. He also missed time with a shoulder injury.

TENNESSEE: Coach Butch Jones has chosen junior Justin Worley as the starting quarterback for the season opener Saturday against Austin Peay.

Jones called it a “very, very tight race,” but said Worley’s experience and ability to take care of the ball put him ahead.

Worley has been competing with redshirt freshman Nathan Peterman and freshmen Joshua Dobbs and Riley Ferguson for the right to take over for the departed Tyler Bray, who threw for 3,612 yards and 34 touchdowns last season.

LOUISIANA STATE: Les Miles is keeping Texas Christian guessing about whether running back Jeremy Hill, the Tigers’ leading rusher last season, will play in Saturday night’s opener.

Miles says Hill will miss some playing time because of his arrest in late April. However, Miles is not specifying how long Hill will be benched and says he’d be surprised if Hill did not join the No. 12 Tigers in Dallas for the game against the 20th-ranked Horned Frogs.

The 20-year-old Hill pleaded guilty in July to misdemeanor battery in connection with a punch he threw outside a bar last spring. Hill was re-instated to the team in early August after a judge ruled the running back could remain on probation, even though he’d violated his probation for an earlier misdemeanor plea.

LOUISVILLE: Coach Charlie Strong said senior running back Senorise Perry will start Sunday’s season opener against Ohio.

Perry, who was the Cardinals’ second-leading rusher last season with 705 yards and a team-high 11 touchdowns, will see his first action since a season-ending right anterior cruciate ligament tear on Nov. 10 at Syracuse.

OKLAHOMA: Offensive lineman Jacob Reed was suspended and charged with hitting his ex-girlfriend after breaking into her apartment over the weekend.

Court records indicate that burglary and assault charges against the 23-year-old Reed were filed Monday in Cleveland County District Court. School spokesman Pete Moris says Reed was suspended indefinitely while the matter is pending.

OREGON STATE: Coach Mike Riley has named Sean Mannion the starting quarterback for the No. 25 Beavers ahead of their season opener Saturday against Eastern Washington.

UCLA: All-American linebacker Anthony Barr and starting left tackle Simon Goines are expected to be in the Bruins’ lineup when UCLA opens against Nevada on Saturday after returning from preseason injuries.
