Georgia safeties sit out practice

Georgia freshman safety Quincy Mauger continues to move up the depth chart because of the injuries at the position.

Two safeties Tray Matthews (hamstring) and Corey Moore (knee) – didn’t practice on Friday.

Shaquille Fluker, another safety, was on the field, but wearing a non-contact jersey because of what was listed as a groin strain.

Georgia coach Mark Richt said Matthews’ hamstring injury shouldn’t keep the freshmen out of the opener.

FLORIDA: The No. 10 Gators won’t have their top running back and best blocker in the season opener.

Coach Will Muschamp ruled out running back Matt Jones (viral infection) and right guard Jon Halapio (torn pectoral muscle), saying neither will be ready to play next week against Toledo.

Muschamp called them “huge absences” for the offense, but added that he has confidence in their backups.

FLORIDA STATE: Coach Jimbo Fisher has named Jameis Winston starting quarterback.

The redshirt freshman completed 12 of 15 passes for 205 yards and two touchdowns in Florida State’s spring game in April.

TEXANS: Houston coach Gary Kubiak says the NFL has upheld defensive end Antonio Smith’s three-game suspension.

Smith was suspended Wednesday for the last two preseason games and Houston’s season opener for hitting Miami guard Richie Incognito with the Dolphins player’s helmet.

Smith appealed the suspension, but his appeal was denied Friday.

Kubiak says he’s disappointed in the decision, but that the team understands and accepts it.

REDSKINS: At least Robert Griffin III has a sense of humor about the $10,000 fine over his “Operation Patience” shirt.

The quarterback accepted the team’s offensive player of the year award Friday at their annual Welcome Home Luncheon.

Addressing the crowd, Griffin pointed out the charity auction that had taken place a few minutes earlier, saying: “Those auctioneers did a good job. I would’ve given them 10 grand, but the NFL took it away from me this week.”

The league fined Griffin for wearing a T-shirt with the words “Operation Patience” as he warmed up before Monday night’s game against Pittsburgh.

STEELERS: Acquired Felix Jones from Philadelphia, shipping outside linebacker Adrian Robinson to the Eagles.
