Prince George’s County prosecutors are dropping charges against Maryland running back Wes Brown, weeks after he was accused of assaulting a police officer who was questioning him about a shooting, a spokesman said Monday.
Prosecutors decided to dismiss the case after reviewing the evidence ahead of a preliminary hearing scheduled for Wednesday, said John Erzen, a spokesman for the state’s attorney’s office.
“There’s nowhere to go with this at this point ,” Erzen said.
After the arrest, the university suspended Brown from school and said he was not allowed to participate in any football-related activities. He was the Terrapins’ second-leading rusher as a freshman last season, finishing with 382 yards on 90 carries and two rushing touchdowns.
CALIFORNIA: When the Golden Bears open their first fall camp under new coach Sonny Dykes, the top priority will be identifying the starting quarterback.
California came out of spring ball with junior Austin Hinder, redshirt freshman Zach Kline and freshman Jared Goff in the mix to take over the offense when practice starts Aug. 5. None of the three quarterbacks has ever played a game in college.
That places added priority on identifying the starter as soon as possible to get him ready for a tough opening stretch of the schedule that begins at home against Northwestern on Aug. 31.
“I’m hoping it will happen quickly,” Dykes said Monday.
MISSOURI VALLEY: The Missouri Valley Football conference has long been one of the deepest and most competitive leagues in the Championship Subdivision. Rarely has a team been as big of a preseason favorite as North Dakota State.
The two-time defending national champions were a unanimous pick to win the league in a poll released Monday.
North Dakota State, which returns 18 starters from a team that went 14-1, got all 39 first-place votes.
