What’s the game plan this fall for South Carolina superstar defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, who posted a sack and two tackles for loss in the Gamecocks’ 35-7 win over Georgia last season?
“I think we’re going to do the old Burt Reynolds’ Longest Yard and not block and let (Aaron Murray) throw it as hard as he can at him,” Bobo said, laughing.
“We’ve got to realize he’s going to make some plays. We’ll do some things to try to discourage him. Maybe he’ll change his mind, think he needs to sit out and turn pro.”
Bobo was the keynote speaker Thursday night at the UGA Day at Savannah Rapids Pavilion. Bobo was joined by University of Georgia president-elect Jere Morehead and men’s basketball coach Mark Fox.
Bobo said he’s not currently the most popular person among the offensive players because he’s demanding more out of his returners. Georgia’s high-octane offense (37.8 points and 468 yards per game last season) returns senior quarterback – and Heisman Trophy candidate – Aaron Murray, along with standout running backs Todd Gurley and Keith Marshall.
“They don’t like me too much after this spring,” Bobo said. “I’m trying to hammer the point that last year is last year. You’re not going to be able to show up at practice and say we’re going to pick up where we left off last year. Yeah, we did some good things offensively last year, but that’s over with.”
Bobo said there’s a vacancy at the No. 3 running back position. Augusta’s Brendan Douglas, who signed in February, will compete with fellow signees A.J. Turman and J.J. Green for the job, Bobo said.
“It was huge for us to get (Douglas) late in the process. He’s a guy we always liked. He’s a big guy. He’s strong. I always felt he wanted to be at Georgia. Guys who tend to do really well want to be there. Guys like that have always been successful at Georgia.”
Whether Douglas gets to face Clemson in the season opener on Aug. 31 or South Carolina the week after remains to be seen.
The returners who have lost three consecutive games to the Gamecocks will be ready.
“I think our guys are eager to play that game,” Bobo said. “We were obviously embarassed that game and got thoroughly whipped by that defense. We’ll be ready for that game. I promise you.”
