Hawkeyes advance to NIT semifinals

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Roy Devyn Marble scored 24 points and Iowa ended Virginia’s 19-game home winning streak with a 75-64 victory in the NIT quarterfinals on Wednesday night, earning the Hawkeyes a trip to Madison Square Garden.

Marble’s 3-pointer with 13:02 to play gave Iowa (24-12) a 42-41 lead and sparked a 19-5 run that featured six points inside from Adam Woodbury and 3-pointers by Josh Oglesby and Zach McCabe. McCabe’s finished the run, putting the Hawkeyes ahead 58-46.

Justin Anderson scored a career-high 24 points to lead Virginia (23-12).

It was only the second home loss for the Cavaliers, and both denied them a trip to New York. The first came against Delaware in the Preseason NIT, also with a trip to Madison Square Garden on the line, and had been Virginia’s last home loss.



In Hattiesburg, Miss., Tyler Haws scored 25 points, Brock Zylstra added 23 and Brigham Young (24-11) beat Southern Mississippi (27-10) in the quarterfinals.

BYU went on an 11-0 run early in the first half and never trailed again, leading by double digits the entire second half.

Brandon Davies added 12 points and 13 rebounds for the Cougars.

Southern Miss (27-10) lost at home for just the second time in two seasons. Daveon Boardingham led the Golden Eagles with 18 points.


In Waco, Texas, Cory Jefferson scored 26 points and Pierre Jackson added 20 as Baylor (21-14) beat Providence (19-15) in the quarterfinals.

Bryce Cotton led the Friars with 23 points.
