Baylor's Brittney Griner breaks blocks record in win over Oklahoma

WACO, Texas — Brittney Griner set the NCAA career record for blocked shots while also scoring 15 points to lead six Baylor players in double figures, and the top-ranked Lady Bears (18-1, 8-0 Big 12) extended their home-court winning streak to 50 with an 82-65 victory over No. 20 Oklahoma on Saturday.

Griner got her record-tying and record-breaking blocks by swatting away shots by Aaryn Ellenberg in a span of 2½ minutes in the second half. With eight in the game before fouling out, the 6-foot-8 Griner has 665 career blocks, two more than Louella Tomlinson of St. Mary’s in California from 2007-11.

Griner, who fouled out for only the second time in her 131-game career, finished two points shy of matching the Big 12 career scoring record held by Oklahoma State’s Andrea Riley (2,835 points from 2007-10).

Ellenberg had 33 points for the Sooners (15-4, 5-2).

In South Bend, Ind., Skylar Diggins scored 21 points, all in the first half when she was 9 of 9 shooting, and Notre Dame (18-1, 7-0 Big East) dominated Providence (6-13, 1-5) from the start, beating the Friars to win its 13th in a row.

In Cincinnati, Stefanie Dolson scored 15 points in limited time, and Connecti­cut’s tough, physical defense allowed only nine points in the first half, setting up a victory over Cincinnati.

UConn (18-1, 5-1 Big East) has won six in a row. The Bearcats (8-11, 0-6) have lost six in a row overall.

WEST VIRGINIA 49

In Morgantown, W.Va., Hallie Christofferson scored 23 points and grabbed seven boards to lead Iowa State (14-4, 5-3 Big 12) to a win over West Virginia (11-8, 3-5).

Ayana Dunning led West Virginia with 17 points.
