SAN DIEGO — Linebacker Kyle Van Noy forced a fumble in the end zone and recovered it for a touchdown, and scored on a 17-yard interception return, both in the fourth quarter, to lead Brigham Young University to a 23-6 victory over San Diego State in the Poinsettia Bowl on Thursday night.
The big plays swung the momentum for the Cougars (8-5) in what had been a tedious defensive struggle.
San Diego State (9-4), playing in the hometown bowl for the second time in three years, missed the chance for its first 10-win season since 1977.
The Aztecs also had their seven-game winning streak snapped.
GEORGIA: With less than seven weeks left until national signing day, Georgia has lost its recruiting coordinator.
Auburn athletic director Jay Jacobs confirmed Thursday night on Twitter that longtime Bulldogs assistant Rodney Garner – his onetime co-worker at Auburn – has accepted a position as assistant head coach defensive line coach on Gus Malzahn’s new Tigers staff.
LOUISIANA STATE: Punter Brad Wing has been suspended for the Chick-fil-A Bowl against Clemson for violating team rules, the school announced Thursday.

Mosley leads the Crimson Tide in tackles with 99.
WISCONSIN: Gary Andersen was officially hired as the Badgers’ new coach Thursday and will be formally introduced at a news conference this morning.
The former Utah State coach replaces Bret Bielema, who suddenly left the Badgers program for Arkansas earlier this month.
UTAH STATE: Promoted offensive coordinator Matt Wells to replace Andersen as head football coach, the school announced Thursday.
Wells, 39, played quarterback for the Aggies in the mid-1990s and has coached at the school for the past two seasons.
OREGON: Coach Chip Kelly says the Ducks have cooperated fully with the NCAA investigation into the school’s use of recruiting services, and he isn’t particularly surprised that the process has taken so long.
He also says that no potential recruits have mentioned the probe.
