South Florida drops Georgia in basketball

TAMPA, Fla. — Anthony Collins had 17 points and 10 assists to lead South Florida past Georgia 64-53 on Friday night.

Shaun Noriega scored 15 points and Toarlyn Fitzpatrick added 13 for the Bulls (5-2).

Georgia (2-5) got 19 points from Kentavious Caldwell-Pope. The sophomore guard has been the Bulldogs’ leading scorer in all seven games this season.

Collins made a jumper as part of a 3-point play to put the Bulls up 53-50 with 3:33 left.

Jawanza Poland connected on a free throw and Victor Rudd hit a 3-pointer to make it 57-50 with just under two minutes to play.

NO. 6 SYRACUSE 91,

ARKANSAS 82

In Fayetteville, Ark., James Southerland scored a career-high 35 points to lead Syracuse (5-0) past Arkansas (3-3).

Southerland was also a career-best 9 for 13 on 3-pointers.

BJ Young led Arkansas (3-3) with 25 points.

NO. 10 KANSAS 84,

OREGON STATE 78

In Kansas City, Mo., Ben McLemore scored 21 points, Travis Releford added 20 and Kansas (6-1) held off repeated Oregon State rallies to beat the Beavers (4-2).

Jeff Withey finished with 17 points, five rebounds and three blocks for Kansas.

Roberto Nelson had 17 points for Oregon State.

NO. 20 GEORGETOWN 37,

TENNESSEE 36

In Washington, George­town and Tennessee held each other scoreless over the final four minutes, and the Hoyas (5-1) beat the Volunteers (4-2) in a display of abysmal shooting in the Southeastern Conference/Big East Challenge.

The teams combined to make just 7 of 20 shots from the free-throw line. The field-goal shooting was just as horrid, with the Vols hitting 33 percent and the Hoyas 36 percent.

No player scored in double figures for either team.
