Penn State ends emotional season with win over Wisconsin

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Sam Ficken hit a 37-yard field goal in overtime, and Wisconsin’s Kyle French attempt from 45 yards went wide left to seal Penn State’s 24-21 win Saturday in an emotional season finale.

The Nittany Lions (8-4, 6-2 Big Ten) could have ended it a play earlier, but linebacker Glenn Carson dropped a potential interception.

Still, the Beaver Stadium faithful celebrated after French’s miss on Senior Day capped a challenging year that began with landmark sanctions from the NCAA for the Jerry Sandusky child molestation scandal.

Running back Montee Ball ran for 111 yards and a touchdown on 27 carries for Wisconsin ((7-5, 4-4), and set the NCAA record with his 97th career score.

NORTHWESTERN 50, ILLINOIS 14

In Evanston, Illinois, Venric Mark rushed for 127 yards and a touchdown as Northwestern (9-3, 5-3 Big Ten) improved its chances for a berth in a New Year’s Day bowl game, beating Illinois (2-10, 0-8).

MICHIGAN STATE 26, MINNESOTA 10

In Minneapolis, Le’Veon Bell rumbled for a career-high 266 yards and a fourth-quarter touchdown to put the game away, leading Michigan State (6-6, 3-5 Big Ten) over Minnesota (6-6, 2-6) on to secure a spot in a bowl game.

BAYLOR 52, TEXAS TECH 45 (OT)

In Arlington, Texas, Glasco Martin scored on a 4-yard run in overtime and Baylor (6-5, 3-5 Big 12) overcame three missed field goals, including one on the last play of regulation, to become bowl eligible with a win over Texas Tech (7-5, 4-5).

Nick Florence threw for 396 yards and three touchdowns for the Bears.

who didn’t lead until Eddie Lackey’s 55-yard interception return for a touchdown on the first play of a wild fourth quarter.
