DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Former Strom Thurmond star Aramis Hillary threw for 180 yards and a touchdown and added 50 yards on the ground as Coastal Carolina defeated Bethune-Cookman 24-14 Saturday in the first round of the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs.

Hillary completed 19 of 24 passes and his 3-yard touchdown to Matt Hazel, a former North Augusta star, gave Coastal Carolina (8-4) a 14-0 lead with 7:16 left in the half after a scoreless first quarter.

Bethune-Cookman (9-3) forced Hillary to fumble and throw an interception on each of Coastal Carolina’s first two possessions of the second half but could not capitalize.

Jeremy Height led Coastal Carolina’s rushing attack with 78 yards and Marcus Whitener, who had just 12 rushing yards all season, finished with 73 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries.

Whitener’s 14-yard touchdown gave Coastal Carolina an early 7-0 lead.

The Chanticleers will take on Old Dominion in the second round on Dec. 1.
