South Carolina women top Hampton in Paradise Jam

ST. THOMAS, Virgin Islands — Aleighsa Welch had 16 points and 11 rebounds as South Carolina defeated Hampton 45-34 Thursday in the Paradise Jam.

Ashley Bruner had 12 rebounds for the Gamecocks (5-0), who will take on Florida Gulf Coast today.

Alyssa Bennett led Hampton (4-1) with 13 points.

NO. 2 CONNECTICUT 95, WAKE FOREST 34

In St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, Breanna Stewart scored 20 points while Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis and Morgan Tuck each had 16 to help Connecticut (3-0) rout Wake Forest (2-2) in the Paradise Jam.

UConn dominated from the start, scoring the game’s first 12 points and carrying a 45-12 lead into halftime.

The Huskies held the Demon Deacons (2-2) to only four field goals in the first 20 minutes. It took 7 minutes for Wake Forest to hit its first basket and the Demon Deacons missed their last 15 shots from the field in the first half.

While Wake Forest couldn’t make a basket, UConn was hitting almost everything. Stefanie Dolson made her first career 3-pointer in the first half and finished with 11 points. The Huskies finished the game shooting 69 percent from the field.

Asia Williams scored 10 to lead Wake Forest (2-2), which scored the first two baskets of the second half but could get no closer. The Demon Deacons shot just 22 percent from the field.

The Huskies will play Marist today while Wake Forest will face Purdue.

Junior guard Bria Hartley played in her first game of the season after missing the first two with a sprained left ankle. She had eight points in 15 minutes.

NO. 14 PURDUE 71, MARIST 51

In St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, KK Houser scored 17 points to help Purdue (4-0) rout Marist (2-2) in the Paradise Jam.

Purdue led 16-13 midway through the first half before going on a 23-6 run to close the period and take control of the game.

Marist could only get within 18 points in the second half. Emma O’Connor scored 10 points to lead the Red Foxes.
