But the Washington County star who’s recovering from a torn ACL, MCL and meniscus can also look to a happily blue-colored future: she signed with North Carolina on Thursday.
“It’s very exciting,” Gray said. “I was ready to go there and start playing.”
Gray averaged nearly 30 points, eight rebounds and five steals a game for the Lady Hawks as a junior. She led Washington County on a 63-game winning streak that included a Class AAA state championship as a sophomore and didn’t end until a loss to Columbia in the state final.
In a perfect world, Gray would return at some point this season, but because of the severity of the August setback, she doesn’t know if she can.
Gray is currently going through a tough rehab process that focuses on getting her knee stronger. She said she’s hoping to start running next week.
“It’s intense, but it’s going great,” Gray said. “I’m staying real positive.”
LAKESIDE: Two Lakeside golfers made their college decisions official Thursday.
Eunice Yi and Emmanuel Kountakis literally shared the stage in the school’s auditorium when they signed their respective letters of intent. Yi signed to play golf for Augusta State’s women’s team while Kountakis signed to play for the Mercer.
Both head into their senior year with impressive résumés. The pair were 2012 Class AAAA All-State golfers in 2012. Yi helped lead the Lady Panthers to the Class AAAA state championship while Kountakis and his teammates were Class AAAA state runners-up.
AIKEN: A trio of Hornets secured their collegiate futures on Thursday.
Volleyball player Tyler Smith signed with Wingate. Smith had 100.5 blocks and 280 kills this season for the Hornets, who reached the Class AAAA state final for the third year in a row. Aiken won it all in 2010.
Baseball players Travonte Roberts and Bryce Saunders also signed. Roberts went with Liberty while Saunders chose Francis Marion.
NORTH AUGUSTA: The Yellow Jackets’ JoJo Higgenbottom, a first baseman, signed with USC Aiken.
EVANS: Softball player Savanna Gladue signed with Armstrong Atlantic. She was an All-Region pick this season.
