Georgia Southern cruises to victory over Howard

STATESBORO, Ga. — Jerick McKinnon ran for three touchdowns and threw two more and Georgia Southern posted its eighth 300-yard rushing game of the season in a 69-26 win over Howard on Saturday.

McKinnon completed 2 of 4 passes, both for touchdowns, and had 198 rushing yards for the Eagles (8-2).

APPALACHIAN STATE 33, FURMAN 28

In Boone, N.C., Jamal Jackson passed for 332 yards as Appalachian State (8-3, 6-2) edged Furman (3-7, 2-5) to claim its seventh Southern Conference title in the past eight years.

It was the second consecutive game Jackson has passed for more than 300 yards.

WOFFORD 16,  CHATTANOOGA 13 (OT)

In Spartanburg, S.C., Eric Breitenstein ran for 132 yards and scored the game-winning touchdown in overtime to propel Wofford (8-2, 6-2) past Chattanooga (5-5, 4-3) in a Southern Conference battle.

SAMFORD 26, ELON 15

In Elon, N.C., Fabian Truss rushed for a career-high 219 yards and two touchdowns as Samford (7-3, 5-3) took an early lead and held on to beat Elon (3-7, 1-6) .

THE CITADEL 27, VMI 24

In Lexington, Va., Derek Douglas returned a fumble 21 yards for a touchdown to give The Citadel a 21-point lead in the third quarter, and the Bulldogs (6-4) held on to beat Virginia Military Institute (2-8).

NORTH CAROLINA A&T 17, SOUTH CAROLINA STATE 7

In Greensboro, N.C., Ricky Lewis ran in a go-ahead touchdown with 7:54 to play, and North Carolina A&T (6-4, 4-3) came back to beat South Carolina State (4-6, 3-4) in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference action.

COASTAL CAROLINA 65, PRESBYTERIAN 7

In Clinton, S.C., former Storm Thurmond star Aramis Hillary threw for 261 yards and five touchdowns in Coastal Carolina’s victory.

Former North Augusta standout Matt Hazel caught two of Hillary’s touchdown passes, and had six catches in the game.

CHARLESTON SOUTHERN 28, GARDNER-WEBB 10

In Charleston, S.C., Malcolm Dixon scored two of Charleston Southern’s three fourth-quarter touchdowns as the Buccaneers (5-5, 3-2 Big South Conference) topped Gardner-Webb (2-8, 1-4) for their fourth consecutive home win.

MAINE 51, GEORGIA STATE 7

In Orono, Maine, Marcus Wasilewski threw four touchdown passes as Maine routed Georgia State (1-10) in Bill Curry’s final game as the Panthers’ coach.
