In Chapel Hill, N.C., Gio Bernard rushed for a career-high 262 yards and a touchdown, Sean Tapley and A.J. Blue added two TDs apiece, and North Carolina (4-2, 1-1 ACC) beat Virginia Tech (3-3, 1-1).
Tapley returned a kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown and added a 19-yard scoring catch from Bryn Renner for the Tar Heels. They won their third in a row, rolled up 533 total yards and claimed their first home victory over the Hokies since 1938.
DUKE 42, VIRGINIA 17
In Durham, N.C., Conner Vernon caught two touchdown passes and set the Atlantic Coast Conference record for career receptions and Anthony Boone threw four TD passes in his first start, helping Duke (5-1, 2-0) crush Virginia (2-4, 0-2).
With his seven catches for 93 yards on the afternoon, Vernon now has 239 receptions in his career, surpassing Clemson’s Aaron Kelly as the ACC’s all-time leader in career receptions.
MARYLAND 19, WAKE FOREST 14
In College Park, Md., freshman Stefon Diggs took a short pass 63 yards to set up a 1-yard touchdown run by Justus Pickett with 5:37 left, and Maryland (3-2) opened the Atlantic Coast Conference portion of its schedule with a win over Wake Forest (3-3, 1-3).
The Terrapins (3-2, 1-0) snapped a two-game skid and surpassed their victory total from 2011, when they went 2-10 in coach Randy Edsall’s first season. Maryland also matched its win total in the ACC of last season.
ARMY 34, BOSTON COLLEGE 31
In West Point, N.Y., Trent Steelman rushed for 141 yards and scored three times, including a decisive 29-yard touchdown run with 45 seconds left, and Army (1-4) beat Boston College (1-4) to snap an eight-game losing streak.
