Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher said Monday that the Heisman Trophy is a popularity contest for “show dogs” with the winner now usually the best player on which team voters feel is the best.

Fisher, who is adamant about trying to shield his players from outside distractions, bristled briefly when asked about quarterback EJ Manuel’s chances of winning the award.

“Like I say, that’s for show dogs,” Fisher said. “If you want to parade him around and do all that, I’d rather have a hunting dog.

“When I let him out that truck, he’s ready to go,” Fisher said. “I think that’s what he is and I think he understands that. He’s mature enough to understand that.”

ARKANSAS: Coach John L. Smith’s attempts to boost the spirits of the fan base during a booster club luncheon faltered when he mistakenly referred to Arkansas as Alabama – home of the No. 1 team that shut out the Razorbacks 52-0.

“Don’t give up on us. It’s our program, it’s a state of Alabama program,” Smith said, prompting groans throughout the packed room. “It’s not one individual’s program.”

When the gaffe was pointed out moments later, Smith responded: “I did? Where would that come from? I’ve never even heard of Alabama.”

MISSOURI: Linebacker Zaviar Gooden reinjured his hamstring Saturday and will not play in this week’s game at Central Florida.
