The Citadel drops Appalachian State

BOONE, N.C. — The Citadel jumped on Appalachian State early, scoring 38 points in the first half en route to a 52-28 victory on Saturday.

The Citadel moves to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the Southern Conference for the first time since its championship season of 1992.

The Mountaineers had won 17 of the past 18 games against the Bulldogs, including eight in a row.

Appalachian State’s 18-game regular-season home winning streak was snapped.

EASTERN KENTUCKY 35, COASTAL CAROLINA 17

In Conway, S.C., Eastern Kentucky’s T.J. Pryor hit Tyrone Goard for a 77-yard touchdown pass late in the second quarter, and the Colonials defeated Coastal Carolina.

Former Strom Thurmond star Aramis Hillary threw for 205 yards and a touchdown for the Chanticleers.

TEXAS-SAN ANTONIO 38, GEORGIA STATE 14

In Atlanta, Evans Okotcha ran for three touchdowns and Eric Soza passed for two as Texas-San Antonio stayed unbeaten with a rout of winless Georgia State.

Soza hit on 17 of 24 passes for 206 yards.

ILLINOIS 44, CHARLESTON SOUTHERN 0

In Champaign, Ill., Reilly O'Toole threw for 333 yards and five touchdowns and receiver Ryan Lankford had 97 yards and two scores to lead Illinois over Charleston Southern.

WOFFORD 49,  WESTERN CAROLINA 20

In Spartanburg, S.C., Wofford racked up 590 yards on the ground in a victory over Western Carolina.

SAMFORD 44, GARDNER-WEBB 23

In Boiling Springs, N.C., Fabian Truss ran for three touchdowns and returned a kickoff for another as Samford eased past Gardner-Webb to stay unbeaten on the young season, keeping the Runnin’ Bulldogs winless in the process.

ELON 48, WEST VIRGINIA STATE 14

In Elon, N.C., backed by four TD passes from Thomas Wilson, Elon trumped West Virginia State 48-14 Saturday.

Wilson was 18 of 25 passing for 261 yards in the blowout.
