Petrino, speaking publicly for the first time since his firing in an interview with ESPN, acknowledged the affair with former football staffer Jessica Dorrell and said he is in counseling with his wife, Becky.
The former Atlanta Falcons and Louisville coach was fired by Arkansas athletic director Jeff Long on April 10 for a “pattern of misleading” behavior after an April 1 motorcycle accident. Petrino initially said he was the only passenger but later admitted to Dorrell’s presence and that he had given her $20,000 in gifts.
“How could I put what we had in jeopardy?” Petrino said. “This is what I wake up early every morning thinking about, what I lay in bed thinking about. Why?
“I just don’t understand how I could do it. You put energy into the people that love you, that count on you.”
Petrino was 34-17 in four seasons with the Razorbacks and in the middle of a seven-year contract under which his salary averaged $3.53 million per year.
GEORGIA: Josh Harvey-Clemons knew for sure that he would begin his Georgia career in the secondary days before preseason camp started when coaches determined that at 6-foot-5 and 208 pounds, he didn’t have enough weight to be an outside linebacker.
Harvey-Clemons already went through drills this summer playing nickel and safety knowing he wouldn’t have the size to go up against tight ends and tackles.
He’s made the most of his time in the secondary so far.
“He’s flying around and making plays,” receiver Marlon Brown said.
Safety Shawn Williams said heading into Thursday’s practice that Harvey-Clemons was leading the defense with four interceptions this preseason.
• Asked whether he won’t reveal the expected suspensions to safety Bacarri Rambo and Alec Ogletree until the first game week, coach Mark Richt said: “Yeah, I don’t know when will let y’all know that. I don’t like talking about that.”
PENN STATE: Cornerback Derrick Thomas has transferred to Marshall.
Marshall coach Doc Holliday announced Thomas’ transfer Thursday.
Thomas, a junior, will be eligible to play this season because of the NCAA’s penalties against Penn State following the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse case.
