Martinez has been Oklahoma’s secondary coach the past two seasons after spending nine years at Georgia, where he was defensive coordinator from 2005-09 while also coaching the defensive backs.
Martinez resigned from his job at Oklahoma in January to make room for Mike Stoops – head coach Bob Stoops’ younger brother – to become the new co-defensive coordinator.
Auburn hasn’t announced what position he’ll coach. Phillip Lolley recently left his position as cornerbacks coach to move into an administrative role.
Martinez replaced new Auburn defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder in that position at Georgia. VanGorder, who spent last season with the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons, said he wasn’t sure what position a new hire would coach.
COURTS: The fight between Mike Leach and Texas Tech isn’t over yet.
Leach’s attorney vowed to keep fighting after the Texas Supreme Court on Friday rejected the former coach’s appeal in his wrongful termination lawsuit against Texas Tech.
The court issued its decision without comment more than two years after he was fired by the university amid allegations that he mistreated a player with a concussion.
The player, Adam James, is the son of Craig James, a former Southern Methodist star and ESPN broadcaster. Leach denied the allegation and later sued the school, saying he suspects an $800,000 bonus he was due the day after his 2009 firing was behind his dismissal. He was recently hired as the coach at Washington State.
PENN STATE: As Jay Paterno figures out what to do next, the former Penn State assistant coach at least knows one avenue he will not pursue.
Paterno, son of the late head coach Joe Paterno, said he was nominated to run for a seat on the university’s Board of Trustees, though he never declared his candidacy and cannot run anyway because of election guidelines.
According to Paterno, the Trustees office informed him last week that he had received at least 50 nominating votes, the threshold needed to qualify. But bylaws prevent former employees from serving for a period of three years after leaving the university.
