South Carolina special teams coach John Butler is leaving for Penn State and the staff of new Nittany Lions coach Bill O’Brien.

Butler’s departure means Spurrier has three staff vacancies to fill.

Assistant coach in charge of defense, Ellis Johnson, became the Southern Mississippi coach in December. Running backs coach Jay Graham took a similar position at his alma mater of Tennessee.

GEORGIA: Defensive coordinator Todd Grantham says he is “on track” to an agreement for a contract extension.

Grantham has one year remaining on his three-year contract with Georgia. He says he has talked with coach Mark Richt and athletic director Greg McGarity and is close to “finalizing details” on a contract extension.

PENN STATE: The university’s alumni magazine, showing up in nearly 130,000 mailboxes this month, has dedicated its latest issue to the Jerry Sandusky scandal, from a funeral all-black cover lamenting “our darkest days” to several photo montages to 38 pages examining the most traumatic event in school history.

LOUISIANA STATE: Wide receivers coach Billy Gonzales has accepted the offensive coordinator’s job at Illinois.

JACKETS’ MILLER CHOOSES CITADEL

North Augusta senior Vinny Miller confirmed Wednesday that he has committed to play at The Citadel next fall.

The Yellow Jackets running back and The Augusta Chronicle’s South Carolina high school football player of the year led the area in rushing with 2,704 yards and 36 touchdowns.

“They’re the ones who have been the most interested in me,” Miller said of the Football Championship Subdivision program. “It’s a place I can go play football and get a great education and a great job.”

Miller was a key contributor to the Yellow Jackets’ run to the Class AAAA Division II state semifinals this past fall. Coach Dan Pippin said Miller was overlooked by some college programs because he was a linebacker, punter and punt returner as a junior and didn’t start at tailback until his senior year.

Miller said he made the decision to go to The Citadel after defensive coordinator Josh Conklin and assistant coach Craig Candeto visited his house last weekend. Miller said he’ll most likely be a tailback for the Bulldogs.
