Redshirt freshman guard Brent Benedict, who was trying to return to form after sustaining a knee injury in high school, is leaving the team for "personal reasons," the school announced Sunday afternoon.
Benedict tore his ACL, PCL, meniscus and hamstring in a noncontact injury while running down the field to celebrate a touchdown as a high school senior.
He returned from the long layoff but struggled at times this spring.
Benedict was listed as the backup right guard on the Bulldogs' preseason spring depth chart.
Redshirt freshman Kolton Houston is the main challenger to push Chris Burnette for the starting spot at right guard. Houston is listed as the backup left guard.
Benedict is the third offensive lineman lost since April. Offensive tackle Trinton Sturdivant sustained a torn ACL, and former Jefferson County offensive tackle A.J. Harmon left school after the spring semester and has transferred to Alabama State.
Another player who left the team to transfer, linebacker Marcus Dotwin, will play this fall at North Alabama, according to the Times Daily of Florence, Ala. He will join former Bulldog linebacker/safety Nick Williams there.
