Paine College officials provided few details Tuesday regarding sexual assault allegations made against the school's baseball coach by a 22-year-old female student.
Pete Cardenas, a former Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Coach of the Year, was suspended after a student told police that he French-kissed her after he stopped to talk to her in the hallway on April 5.
Brandon Brown, the college's vice president of institutional advancement, said the Richmond County Sheriff's Office and campus security are investigating the allegation.
Brown would not say whether Cardenas was being paid while off duty.
"We try to do our due process and make sure the process is one that's fair, one that's giving enough time to fully get the scope so we can make the decision to what is the appropriate action to be taken," Brown said.
According to an incident report, the student said Cardenas stopped her in the hallway to ask why she was talking in another teacher's class so much.
When the student told Cardenas she wasn't talking in class, Cardenas pulled up the front of her hat, which lifted her head, and forced his tongue into her mouth, according to the report.
Cardenas then asked the student if she wanted to go get something to eat later, the student told police.
After she walked away, Cardenas allegedly called the student on her cell phone stating she would have to wait until after 7 p.m. to go to dinner.
"(The student) stated that she just said OK because she was scared and she didn't know what to do," the police report states.
Cardenas told police that he kissed the student because "he wanted to console her."
The student does wish to prosecute, according to the report.
Once upon a time women would tell a man to get his hands off them and then forget about it. Now it is considered a big event, worth publicizing. I know....I know...
A knee in
the right place would have brought the situation to a very quick end!
And once again the pres is missing in action leaving all of the work to Brandon!
Sounds like Paine College doesn't want to answer any questions about this.... Who could blame them though, I guess.
Looks like now he was thrown out trying to advance to 2nd base...
