The two college towns our state universities call home are a study in contrast. The University of South Carolina is basking in the glow of a stunning victory over No. 1 Alabama and thinking seriously about its chances to win the Southeastern Conference title. With its Gamecocks, Columbia is crowing.

Columbia and the University of South Carolina are crowing after beating Alabama and have a chance to win the SEC East. The University of Georgia and Athens are licking their wounds after a disappointing start to the season and the arrests of players.

The University of Georgia, meanwhile, has struggled through a disastrous season start, and even though it finally won a conference game Saturday, it was quickly brought back to reality by the arrest of star running back Caleb King -- the 11th Bulldog to earn the distinction since summer. Along with its Bulldogs, Athens is licking its wounds.

To better gauge the mood on the campuses and in the cities, The Augusta Chronicle followed the coaches' weekly news conferences and chatted with the editors of the student newspapers and mayors.

The editor of the student

The editor of the student newspaper says they're having trouble selling the stadium?

The last Georgia home game not to sell out was on Nov. 25, 2000. We've had our troubles in Athens this year, but selling tickets is not one of them.
