Tar Heels' Davis 'sorry' he trusted former assistant

With North Carolina being investigated by the NCAA and fighting to salvage its season, coach Butch Davis said Monday he is "sorry" he trusted former assistant coach John Blake.

An NCAA investigation of improper benefits and possible academic misconduct has jeopardized several players' college careers.

Davis publicly criticized his recruiting coordinator's "inappropriate" relationship with California-based agent Gary Wichard .

"I am very sorry that all of this stuff has tainted the football program and, as the head football coach, I take a tremendous amount of responsibility for all the football-related issues," Davis said. "I'm the head guy, OK? I'm sorry it has affected the football program. But I'm going to tell you what I'm more sorry about: I'm sorry that I trusted John Blake."

Earlier Monday, ESPN and Yahoo! Sports, citing unnamed sources, reported that Alabama defensive lineman Marcell Dareus told NCAA investigators that Blake had recommended Wichard in a phone conversation.

MICHIGAN STATE: Coach Mark Dantonio was released from a hospital after treatment for a blood clot that was discovered less than two weeks after surgery following a mild heart attack. A school spokesman said his role this week is still to be determined.

ALABAMA: Receiver Julio Jones (knee) and linebacker Chris Jordan (hamstring) are both nursing injuries going to Saturday's game at No. 19 South Carolina. Both are considered to be day-to-day.

SEC AWARDS: Louisiana State running back Stevan Ridley , Alabama linebacker Courtney Upshaw and Mississippi return man Jesse Grandy won player of the week honors.

CONNECTICUT: Running back Robbie Frey underwent knee surgery and is expected to be sidelined for two to three weeks.
