As Georgia closes in on its third week of preseason practice, some of the injured could return as early as next week.

Linebackers Michael Gilliard (hamstring) and Akeem Dent (toe) are on track to possibly start full workouts next week.

Center Ben Jones (knee), guard Cordy Glenn (mononucleosis) and receiver Logan Gray (ankle) might have to wait until the week before the first game on Sept. 4 against Louisiana-Lafayette.

SOUTH CAROLINA: The offense scored four touchdowns for the Gamecocks during a 64-play scrimmage on Thursday.

Connor Shaw , a true freshman, took the first snaps from center on and led his unit down the field on a five-play, 70-yard scoring drive. Shaw hit Tori Gurley with a 25-yard pass and Kenny Miles broke a 27-yard run, setting up Shaw's six-yard run.

Shaw completed 5 of 8 passes for 111 yards.

BCS: U.S. Sen. Orrin Hatch says his push for reform in the Bowl Championships Series isn't going to change regardless of conference changes for Utah and possibly BYU.

Hatch said that the system is what has led the Utes to flee the Mountain West for the Pac-10 and the Cougars to consider leaving and play as an independent.

The Utah Republican says he's fighting to get revenue distributed to all schools -- not just the ones affiliated with the BCS.

WAC DEPARTURES: The commissioner of the Western Athletic Conference says the remaining members aren't likely to make it easy on Fresno State and Nevada when the two schools leave for the Mountain West.

Karl Benson says the Bulldogs and Wolf Pack are going to have to pay up on a departure fee and possibly stay in the WAC until 2012 because they didn't meet a deadline to get out of the league earlier.

ALABAMA: Freshman linebacker Alfy Hill has been ruled an academic nonqualifier because the NCAA's eligibility clearinghouse didn't accept certain classes as core courses for certification.

TENNESSEE: Former defensive lineman Steve DeLong , a member of the College Football Hall of Fame and winner of the 1964 Outland Trophy, died.

He was 67.
