PASADENA, Calif. --- The sure thing was looking shaky for Alabama.

Alabama running back Mark Ingram (22) celebrates with his teammates James Carpenter (77) and Marquise Goodwin (84) after scoring a touchdown during the the fourth quarter of the BCS Championship college football game against Alabama in Pasadena, Calif.

Hanging onto a precarious three-point lead and with momentum on the other side, linebacker Eryk Anders made sure the championship wouldn't slip away.

Anders forced a fumble on his blindside sack of Texas backup quarterback Garrett Gilbert with 3:02 left Thursday night to help the top-ranked Crimson Tide hold on for a 37-21 victory in the BCS title game -- a win that figured to be much easier when Alabama knocked out Colt McCoy early in the first quarter.

With McCoy on the sideline nursing a shoulder injury, the Tide rolled to a 24-6 lead at halftime.

The second half figured to be a laugher with Gilbert -- a freshman who had thrown only 26 college passes -- in the game.

But Gilbert threw two touchdown passes to Jordan Shipley to trim the deficit to 24-21 with 6:15 left, and after an Alabama punt, he had the ball at the 7-yard line, 93 yards away from one of the most improbable comeback stories in the history of the game.

But after an Alabama holding penalty moved the ball to the 17, Gilbert got rocked by Anders and Courtney Upshaw recovered a fumble. Three plays later, Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram surged into the end zone from the 1 for the 10-point lead. A few minutes later, after Gilbert's third interception of the night, Trent Richardson scored his second touchdown to make it 37-21.

Glory came back to one of the country's most storied programs, the football factory that Bear Bryant built.

The game ended when McCoy

The game ended when McCoy went down. Now Alabama needs to defeat Boise State to earn the national championship. Or, they can settle for being selected.

That was the worst national championship that I have seen in a while! It looked like two terrible teams trying to play! What a disappointment.

cliff, you need to let that silly Boise State obsession go. Go look at their schedule. The gamecocks would look impressive too.

The fact that Alabama let a

The fact that Alabama let a completely inexperienced true freshman quarterback lead a comeback and almost beat them like that is amazing. At the same time, the fact that a team like Texas lacks a backup quarterback with meaningful game experience is indefensible. A true freshman with less than 30 career attempts is your best option? The worst case scenario took place last night, and Texas, ranked Forbes' most valuable college football team, was completely unprepared. Sure, he'll be great in the future, but last night was not the night to get him ready for prime time.

I think that this was the

I think that this was the BEST ending to the 2009-10 season. Bama is the BEST!!! Colt McCoy could not handle the tough defense of Bama and was hurt being tackled. That's the way the game is played. Bama just out played Texas and is #1 in the nation.
Bama started out with the jitters, but got over it quickly and played their hearts out. Coach Sabin is a first class coach and person.

Props to UT for playing with heart. Bama had guys dinged up as well...McElroy played with cracked ribs, Ingram was out a quarter with cramps, and McClain had to take several IVs before the game and one at the half.

Those who want to complain must be frustrated UGA fans. What was Bama supposed to do once McCoy went out? Postpone the game until he got healthy? Please.

Bama is back and will cause the rest of the SEC grief for a long time. It's good to be a Bama fan today. RTR!!

SMN, UGA fan here pulling for Bama. However, IMO, the whole game changed with McCoy hurt. You need to get real. Bama may have won anyway, but it sure would have been a totally different game. For instance, the TD before halftime never happens if McCoy is playing.

As the old saying goes " What counts is the score on the board when the clock has triple zeros." There are a lot of Thursday morning quarterbacks out there. Sure it could have been a better game had McCoy not gone down, but that is all part of the game. When will people like Johnston understand.

There's no doubt that a new sheriff is in town in the SEC. Bama will be just about as good next year and with the way Saban is recruiting; it's just plain scary. He may well field the best teams college football has ever seen in the next couple of years.
