Jackets, Dogs, Tigers win basketball openers

ATLANTA — Marcus Georges-Hunt had 17 points and nine rebounds, and Robert Carter Jr. had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds to lead Georgia Tech to an opening 88-57 victory over Presbyterian on Friday night.

Senior center Daniel Miller added 12 points and seven rebounds for the Yellow Jackets, while Trae Golden, a senior transfer from Tennessee, scored 12 points and freshman Travis Jorgenson contributed eight points, five assists and four steals off the bench.

The Jackets shot 51 percent to 34 percent for Pres­byterian and outrebounded the Blue Hose 47-32.

GEORGIA 72, WOFFORD 52

In Athens, Ga., Nemanja Djurisic scored 12 points, Donte’ Williams added 11 and Georgia beat Wofford.

The Bulldogs were coming off a 15-17 season, their third losing record in four years under coach Mark Fox, but they never trailed after Kenny Gaines’ jumper made it 14-12 at the 10:03 mark of the first half.

CLEMSON 71, STETSON 51

In Clemson, S.C., K.J. McDaniels scored a career-high 20 points and the Tigers used a big first-half run to put away Stetson, their 29th consecutive season-opening victory.

McDaniels scored his team’s first 11 points, and the Tigers used a 33-5 run the last 15 minutes of the opening half to lead 46-15 at the break.

Rod Hall, a former Laney star, had 11 points and three assists for the Tigers.

In Columbia, freshman center Alaina Coates scored a game-high 20 points to lead five players in double figure as South Carolina routed Charleston Southern.

GEORGIA TECH 79,

COPPIN STATE 57

In Atlanta, freshman Kaela Davis had 20 points and 11 rebounds to lead Georgia Tech past Coppin State.

DAVIDSON 77, CLEMSON 57

In Clemson, S.C., Laura Murray scored 22 points and Hannah Early added 20 as Davidson beat Clemson.

Quinyotta Pettaway scored 17 to lead Clemson.
