ATLANTA — Chandler Catanzaro kicked a 37-yard field goal as time expired to give No. 14 Clemson a wild 25-24 win over No. 9 Louisiana State in the Chick-fil-A Bowl on Monday night.

Clemson quarterback Tajh Boyd throws a pass against LSU. Boyd led the Tigers on a late scoring drive and Clemson got a win in the Chick-fil-A Bowl on Monday.

Trailing 24-22, Clemson took possession on its 20 with 1:39 remaining. Tajh Boyd completed a pass for 26 yards to DeAndre Hopkins on a fourth-and-16 play during the decisive 10-play drive.

Catanzaro’s kick set off a wild celebration on the field and in the stands. Some players collapsed on the field in apparent disbelief while most of Clemson’s orange jerseys met in a midfield circle.

Hopkins, who had 13 catches for 191 yards and two touchdowns, also had receptions for 7 and 13 yards in the final drive. LSU safety Greg Reid was flagged for pass interference while defending Hopkins.

Jeremy Hill had 126 rushing yards and two touchdowns for LSU (10-3), which finishes a season that began with national championship hopes on a sour note.

Clemson (11-2) was coming off a 27-17 loss to in-state rival South Carolina. It finished the 2011 season at 10-4, when a lopsided 70-33 loss to West Virginia in the Orange Bowl kept the Tigers from 11 wins.

Clemson finished 12-0 in its 1981 national championship season. It was 11-0 in 1948 and 11-1 in 1978. No other Clemson team has won more than 10 games.

“So 11 wins in Clemson history has been a pretty rare thing,” Swinney said Sunday. “And to be at the doorstep of that for the second year in a row is pretty special.”

Reaching 11 wins is special for the Tigers, especially against one of the SEC’s most prominent teams. LSU played for the national championship last season, but was knocked off by Alabama.

Clemson scored at least 37 points in 10 of its 13 games. The exceptions were its three games against SEC teams – a 26-19 opening win over Auburn at the Georgia Dome, the loss to South Carolina, and finally, Monday’s win over LSU which was surprisingly led by the defense.

Thanks Grandpa

That was one of the greatest games I've ever seen. That 4th and long from about their own 20 was a monumental gamble they had to take. Sammy Watkins getting hurt on the first series didn't help and beating LSU is no small feat.

Clemson ran so many offensive plays, (94, I think) LSU wore down. They were losing a defensive player after every play that last series from exhaustion. They were simply wore out by the Clemson pace.

The Bleacher Report picks LSU as the number one ranked team for next year. What does that make Clemson with all their players returning? UGA in the opener, remember.

Great win

Tremendous job by Boyd. That boy needs to go pro! Also, a big assist to the Mad Hatter. He comes by his name naturally. He throws the ball on 2nd and 3rd down, needing only two yards. Wow, how dumb. Didn't make Clemson use a single timeout. double dumb. Les Miles wins because of the tremendous talent he can recruit and that's it. UGA plays them both next year. Ugh.

Clemson came out to prove a point and by gosh they did, good for them. Now I hope the Bulldogs and Gamecocks can play with the same passion and emotion that Clemson showed.

RM and His Picks

I remember your picking Tech and Clemson, RM. Congratulations to you and especially congratulations to those teams. The fourth quarter in the Clemson game was a nail-biter for all time. Clemson's coach had it right in his post-game expression to the babe reporter — the team could have quit, but they kept on coming. Great game!

was this charles odum writer

was this charles odum writer even at the game? I watched it from my couch and could have written a better article than this. Half of his article talked about history and hew bad last years orange bowl was instead of how spectacular this game was.

The bad boys of the SEC. Rude and crude. They definitely represent their fan base. The should transfer to the "WAC" conference. LOL LOL

And we now see what a great USC was as an opponent for Notre Dame.

Roll Tide!! Roll!!!

Yeah, Clemson did a good job

Yeah, Clemson did a good job and did what they had to do when it counted, but they need to send ole Les Miles a big thank you card! What the heck was he thinking?? With so little time left on the clock, he obviously should've ran the ball to run down the clock and to force Clemson to use their timeouts. Oh, well. This is one of those games where I just enjoyed watching it and didn't really care who won...if LSU won, then good for the SEC...if Clemson won, then good for them and Dabo for completing one of the few 11-win seasons in Clemson history.

SEC 3 and 2 in bowls so far.

Florida and BAMA should make it 5-2. So much for Nebraska #1 defense. Have you noticed that cable is showing every win in the history of Notre Dame football. No BAMA reruns? The networks are trying to salvage the commercial ratings and t he payout for Jan 7th.

Way to go GT. You defeated Southern Cal and two refs with class. PAC 10 goes packin' even with the help of the refs.

A hell of a football weekend

Well not technically a “weekend” but still. This has been about as perfect a football weekend that one could wish for. Each and every game, was a game, just about until the end.

Both Ga teams and both SC teams wining their bowl games, ahhhhh, life is good. I knew I slow cooked/smoked those ribs on the grill for a reason!!!

Besides providing pork, greens, and black-eyed peas for new-years day.
