The Gamecocks passers gave Spurrier plenty to watch as starter Connor Shaw and reserve Tanner McEvoy each threw two touchdown passes to highlight South Carolina’s spring game Saturday.
Shaw, the Gamecocks starter known more for his running ability than for throwing the ball, came out firing right away and found Damiere Byrd with a 70-yard touchdown pass on the first play from scrimmage. Shaw added a 39-yard scoring pass to Riley Gallaher to put Shaw’s Black team ahead 14-3 en route to a 38-24 victory over the Garnet.
McEvoy followed Shaw and kept up the strong passing with a 12-yard touchdown throw to Drew Owens and a 63-yard scoring throw to D.L. Moore. Shaw passed for 128 yards hitting six of his seven throws. McEvoy finished with 132 yards on 8 of 12 passing.
And it wasn’t just those players. Backup Dylan Thompson got most of the work with the Garnet team and completed 15 of 20 passes for 168 yards and a touchdown.
