Tigers name Boyd starter

CLEMSON, S.C. --- Tajh Boyd has come out of spring practice as Clemson's starting quarterback.

Boyd is a sophomore who takes over for Kyle Parker, who is playing baseball in the Colorado Rockies organization. Boyd threw for a touchdown and ran for a touchdown in Clemson's spring game April 9. He was 8 of 24 passing for 114 yards.

Freshman Cole Stoudt is listed as Boyd's backup on the spring depth chart.

Running back Andre Ellington is coming off toe surgery following the 2010 regular season.

Defensive ends Malliciah Goodman and Andre Branch get the first crack at replacing All-American Da'Quan Bowers, who led the country with 151 sacks last season.

FIESTA WOES: The NCAA is delaying its decision on whether to continue sanctioning the Fiesta Bowl until later this year, saying it needs time to gather information on how the event will be managed in the future.

The NCAA said in a release on Thursday that it also wants to review the findings of a BCS task force that is examining the financial and political improprieties uncovered in a Fiesta Bowl internal investigation made public in March. That report could be finished by mid-May.

BCS LAWSUIT: Looking to file a federal lawsuit aimed at disbanding the BCS system, Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff put out a request for proposals from national antitrust firms to help with the case.

Shurtleff said Thursday he expects the suit, accusing the BCS of being an illegal monopoly, will be filed this summer. It will seek damages for schools including the University of Utah and Boise State that have lost out on millions of dollars over the years because the existing system keeps nonpreferred conferences at a competitive disadvantage, he said.

CHAMPS HONORED: National champion Auburn's visit to the White House is set.

The Tigers will be guests of President Obama on April 29, at which time he will honor coach Gene Chizik and his players.

BOWL DATES: The 2012 Capital One Bowl will be played on Jan. 2 for just the fourth time since it moved to a New Year's Day spot in 1987, while the Champs Sports Bowl has been set for Dec. 29 next season.

- Charlotte's bowl game will be played at night for the first time.

Belk Bowl officials said the game will kick off at 8 p.m. on Dec. 27 at Bank of America Stadium.

The game pairing teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference and Big East has previously been called the Meineke Bowl and Continental Tire Bowl.
