Augusta's first trip to the South Atlantic League playoffs since 2008 may include a match up against New York Mets pitcher Johan Santana.
The Augusta GreenJackets will face the Mets' Single-A affiliate in Savannah in the first round of the South Atlantic League playoffs. The two-time Cy Young Award winner has made two rehab appearances for the Mets' Advanced-A affiliate in St. Lucie, Fla. ESPNNewYork.com is reporting that Santana will pitch for Savannah in Game 2 on Friday if St. Lucie is eliminated in its first-round Florida State League playoff series, which starts tonight.
Postseason rosters for Augusta and Savannah are due to the South Atlantic League office by noon Wednesday, but league president Eric Krupa said Santana could still pitch in Friday's game even if he's not listed on the Sand Gnats' playoff roster at the beginning of the series.
"Major League rehab starts overrule everything," Krupa said. "We're still a player development league, and they have that golden trump card."
If Santana does pitch in Game 2, he'll go up against Augusta's Shawn Sanford, voted this year's South Atlantic League Most Outstanding Pitcher.
The GreenJackets will play host to Game 1 of the best-of-three series Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. The series will shift to Savannah for Game 2 Friday at 7:05 and Game 3, if necessary, on Saturday at 6:05.
Maybe Augusta can counter with a rehab by Barry Zito!!!!
How 'bout bringing Cal out of retirement to play shortstop?
I'd love to see Cal bat v. Johan.
That would put fannies in those usually-vacant seats.
