PHILADELPHIA — The San Francisco Giants have signed former All-Star second baseman Dan Uggla to a minor league contract.

Uggla was released last Friday by the Braves after hitting just .162 and losing his starting job. The move was announced during Monday night’s game against the Phillies.

The Giants haven’t had much production from their second basemen this season. They’re hoping a change in scenery helps Uggla.

The 34-year-old Uggla has 233 career homers and .244 average. He had five straight 30-homer seasons for the Marlins and Braves between 2007-11. He hit .196 with 43 homers and 143 RBIs in 1,101 at-bats since 2012.

Uggla will cost the Giants only $500,000. The Braves are responsible for the $18 million he’s guaranteed over the rest of this season and next year.

18 million-guaranteed

Why would the Braves pay that kind of $$ and just let it go down the drain. He would be doing something for that much money, if nothing more than helping the boys out in the minors.
That's one reason a families don't attend the games like they use to. Who can fork out $200 plus dollars just to take the kids for one game.

@ AFjoe

I wondered why they didn't put him the minors as well. Some contracts don't allow it except for rehab, but I haven't heard if that was the case with Uggla.

Look up in Wikipedia under

Look up in Wikipedia under minor league options. He has >5 years in the league. He has a veteran's exclusion. My ultimate fantasy dream: Braves have Uggla for several years and he does nothing and costs them millions of $$$. Then the Giants pick him up for $500,000 and helps the team beat the Braves in the playoffs with a few clutch hits.
